Today MTV is celebrating it's 30th anniversary. On August 1, 1981, at 12:01 a.m., MTV launched with the words "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll," spoken by John Lack, and played over footage of the first Space Shuttle launch countdown of Columbia and of the launch of Apollo 11. The first music video to be played on the network was The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star". The second video was Pat Benatar's "You Better Run". This made her the first female artist to appear on the network and made her guitarist/boyfriend/soon to be husband, the first guitarist to appear on the network. MTV became a huge success and played music videos over the decade and they broke the color barrier. Throughout the early-mid 2000s music videos weren't played as often and in 2010 MTV: Music Television was dropped and now it is just called MTV. Reality shows like Jersey Shore and Teen Mom (What the fucking hell??!?) are some of the most watched shows on the network. It's sad the music really doesn't appear anymore but over time things change and we can't always hold onto the past. So happy anniversary but I hate your network now. Bring back the music videos!
